ABOUT THE SESSIONS - In order of sequence

Moving Resonance (Syv)

Based on the sound technique called Continuum coupled with movements, this meditative method is a very easy yet powerful tool to increase mobility and bring physical or emotional healing. Using vocal sounds, vibrations are sent throughout your body and resonate at different levels. By using sounds with the breath and movements, you help the body to be more relaxed and flexible, to expand and to release physical tensions. Your mind becomes more focused and you can let go of mental stress and blockages. Moving Resonance helps you re-connect with the joy of moving and get a spacious sense of well-being.

Kundalini Dance Meditation (Amber)

Kundalini Dance Meditation is an active meditation technique developed by Osho that incorporates movement as a tool of awareness. The meditation has four stages, supported by acoustic music, including shaking, free dancing, stillness and silence. This technique is a unique combination of movement and stillness that allows release, energy flow, witnessing and conscious relaxation.

5 Rhythms Dance (Francesca)

5 Rhythms is a simple yet powerful movement practice that is open to everyone. There are no steps to learn, instead the aim is to find the dancer that lives in every body. If you can breathe then you can dance! Created by Gabrielle Roth, 5 Rhythms is a form of moving meditation that takes you through five rhythmic patterns or movement gateways, and has the power to catalyse healing on a deep level. Inspired by great music, from big beats to laid-back grooves, it can also be uplifting, exhilarating and great fun. The first session will provide an introduction to the practice, and the second an opportunity to drop deeper into the Wave as we move through Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness.

Ecstatic Breath (Martha)

Rapid-fire multitasking and work stress can cause your breathing to become shallow, bringing less oxygen to your brain, increased blood pressure, and a hyped-up nervous system. To center yourself on the intimate moment at hand and invigorate your mind, you just need to breathe. Taking conscious breathing breaks is one of the easiest things you can do to shift your experience and make it more fulfilling. Learn how you can live in ecstatic bliss every day, feeling more positive, supported by life, and enjoying each breath you take.

Sufi Dance Meditation (Amber)

Following in the heart tradition of the Sufis, this one-hour meditation technique utilises dance to bring awareness to our centre, finding stillness amongst centripetal movements. Uplifting music by Shastro accompanies the technique as we journey through repetitive dance that bring us closer and closer to our innermost self.

Oneness Flow – Butoh (Syv)

Both a healing and creative process, Oneness Flow is a personal journey through the rhythm of your body and the Universe. It is a great way to connect with yourself, with others and with the surroundings as a oneness flow through your own and unique dance. By letting go of your ego and daily consciousness, your body can find a new freedom in expression and in the way you perceive yourself. Oneness Flow takes you to a place where everything is possible again, where your body is not bound by any form nor judgment anymore, but is moved by your own memories, feelings and stories, where you can reach and express your emotions. So come and awaken your full body potential!

Laughter Yoga (Martha)

Suitable for people who are new to or curious about laughter yoga, this will be an easy and gentle introduction into the laughter yoga practice. Laughter is a great catalyst to get to know people, relax and have fun. Laughter comes easily and effortlessly through various playful exercises. There is little speaking throughout the workshop except in gibberish, just come along and enjoy!

ABOUT THE FACILITATORS

Syv Bruzeau went to Japan after university to explore Asia and its culture and never left this part of the world. After having opened and run a few vegetarian restaurants, her passion for providing joy and bonding people through food led her to healing techniques and movement therapy. She was trained by Japanese Butoh master Lee Rhizome and learned as well from Eiko and Koma, Katsura Kan, Natsu Nakajima and Tetsuro Fukuhara in New York City and Japan. She also studied Continuum, Feldenkrais Method and Physical Theater and incorporates those learning in her classes. Syv believes that movement can be a part of self-healing, self-discovery and creation. She wants to help people reconnect with their bodies, discover the infinite possibilities of movement and the freedom and joy it brings.

The Importance of Condoms!

Video description: This public service announcement was produced entirely by teens for teens by Community Healthcare Network's Teens P.A.C.T. program in New York City. It is just one in a series of public service announcements collectively titled, MORE THAN JUST SEX! MORE THAN JUST SEX aims to empower young people to make positive decisions, create social change, and reduce the rates of teen pregnancy, STD's, and HIV in New York City and beyond.

A hilarious parody of drug commercials, "The Importance of Condoms" brilliantly describes the possible consequences of having unprotected sex and addresses common reasons that some people do not want to use condoms.

Condoms are 98% effective when used correctly. They provide protection against pregnancy and are the ONLY type of birth control that protect against STDs and HIV. Despite these incredible virtues, some teens still choose not to use condoms. The creators of "The Importance of Condoms" want you to know... CONDOMS ARE IMPORTANT!

This one goes out to all the girls who like to wear mustaches

Published with permission by the poet Stephanie Chan.  She read this poem at the Opening Reception of Portraits of Defacement at Your Mother Gallery 91A Hindoo Road, Singapore. Organised by SlutWalk Singapore and Eros Coaching. Portraits of Dfacement runs till May 12. You can request for a private viewing by contacting Vanessa at +65 91254467. This one goes out to all the girls who like to wear mustaches by Stephanie Chan This one goes out to all the girls who like to wear mustaches Long long before the hipster bible said it was ok to This one goes out to the girls who still like to pull ugly faces in pictures Who still wear heart shaped stickers on their faces Who think that Harry and Draco should have just got married in the last book. And had babies together. And the ones who think that men with kids are more fun to sleep with.   This one goes out to the girls who don't do cuddling, the ones who don't kiss And the ones who only want to. The ones who ask their one night stands To go home before the sun is up, because hey, lets be honest here, we're strangers in the end and cuddling can be so annoying sometimes, you know when one arm goes to sleep and you don't know what to do with the other arm then you find you even can't move coz he's fallen asleep on it and you're wide awake and then.... This is for the ones who value the use of their arms at 6 in the morning. The ones who burp out loud and all aggressive-like just to see what will happen the ones who fall over constantly, the ones who laugh too loudly, the ones who can't cook the ones who couldn't cook till the day they decided they were sick of chips and now can pre-empt Heston  Blumenthal's every move.   This is for the ones without a one special person In their lives, just two she's in 'complicated' with, four she's sleeping with on the side, three of whom she still kinda fancies, and that one extra special vibrator. this one's for the girl who finds that lightning will not strike if she finds herself kissing both the girl and the boy goodbye at the bus stop the morning after the night before.   This one's for the girl who finds out that not only does lightning not strike but she doesn't even acquire any form of leprosy when at 23 she tells her friends that yes, she still happens to be a virgin.   This one's for the girls who used buy Cosmo magazine but now strictly relegate it to toilet reading partly because its useful whenever you run out of toilet paper.   This one's for the girls who learnt right from wrong then went on to write their own kinds of worship songs, who opened the rule book but found it too long, so tore pages out of it to make paper mache spaceships capable of flying into other dimensions.   This is for all of you who make up your own games as you go along, who choose whom to kiss based on their shoes or their hair, who have learnt to be that little bit less afraid, who woke up and realised what century they were in and thought, hell yeah, who aren't trying to be ladies, or lads or Kate Middleton or Tyra Banks. Who aren't trying Who are sometimes trying Who are trying not to try. Who just want to think. Who just want to exist. Who do exist. Who do exist everywhere. We are everywhere.   by Stephanie Chan Published with permission by the poet Stephanie Chan.

Monthly Movie Nights

Tues 8 May - Mother & Child (7:30 – 9:30p.m.)

Mother and Child is an American drama film directed and written by Rodrigo García, and stars Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Kerry Washington, Shareeka Epps and Samuel L. Jackson. It premiered on September 14, 2009 at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival and at the Sundance Film Festival on January 23, 2010, and was the closing night selection within Maryland Film Festival 2010. We will discuss the movie and our relationship with our mothers at the end of the screening.

Fee: $10 per person. $5 for any mother (kindly produce evidence for discount).

Tues 12 June – Green Porno (7:30 – 9:30p.m.)

Deep down in the ocean, strange things happen, acts of love that are unfamiliar to the human eye: Anchovies mate in large orgies; shrimp strip down to get in the mood; starfish can do it two different ways; whales fight to make love. Inspired by the wonderfully odd and humorous short films created by Isabella Rossellini and released on DVD for the first time, Green Porno offers a visually arresting and scientifically accurate look at the sex lives of marine animals and other creatures. We have ACRES (Animal Concerns Research & Education Society) lead a discussion at the end of the screening.

Fee: $10 per person

Tues 10 July - Subjectified (7:30 – 9:30p.m.)

Subjectified is a documentary that presents a real, human picture of the diversity of sexual experiences from women around the U.S. When it comes to sex, women are so often seen but rarely heard. Subjectified lets women speak for themselves. While our culture is saturated with images of female sexuality, the voices of women themselves are surprisingly silent. Through in-depth interviews, Subjectified lets women do the talking, trading easy answers and stereotypes for brutal honesty. The stories may sound familiar: young moms, abstinent Christians, lesbians, survivors of assaults and STD’s. But outside the world of reality TV and sound bites, women approach their lives in complex and unexpected ways: sometimes hilarious, sometimes sobering, and always heartfelt. Subjectified will change the way you think about female sexuality.

Fee: $10 per person

Tues 14 Aug - Greedy for Life (7:30 – 9:30p.m.)

Greedy for Life is a 35-minute documentary about two dynamic women over 80 who embrace life with energy and enthusiasm. When you’re busy living, age is just a number. Shirley is a poet and amateur sculpture; Lavada is a minister and hairdresser. Both are inspiring models for aging well despite the challenges. Greedy for Life is part of an in-depth look at the lives of women over 80.

Another related video will also be played during this session.

Fee: $10 per person

Tues 11 Sept - The Moon Inside You (7:30 – 9:30p.m.)

Diana is not the only one for whom the monthly period is no fun at all. Headaches, nausea, depression -- why is it so widely accepted that women all over the world should feel so lousy on a regular basis? And why is the subject still not openly discussed? With a keen sense of perspective, humor, and self-mockery, Diana goes in search of answers. The most wide-ranging theories put forward by anthropologists, psychologists, journalists, gynecologists, and belly-dance teachers are intercut with old-fashioned information films and animated clips.

Fee: $10 per person

Tues 9 Oct - Precious (7:30 – 9:30p.m.)

Clareece "Precious" Jones is an overweight, illiterate African-American teen in Harlem. Just as she's about to give birth to her second child, Jones is accepted into an alternative school where a teacher helps her find a new path in her life.

Precious is a 2009 American drama film directed by Lee Daniels. Precious is an adaptation by Geoffrey S. Fletcher of the 1996 novel Push by Sapphire. The film stars Gabourey Sidibe, Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, and Mariah Carey. The film marked the acting debut of Sidibe. The film, then without a distributor, premiered to acclaim at both the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, under its original title of Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire. At Sundance, it won the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize for best drama, as well as a Special Jury Prize for supporting actress Mo'Nique.

Fee: $10 per person

Tues 6 Nov - Becoming Orgasmic (7:30 – 9:30p.m.)

Becoming Orgasmic is a fictional story made as a way to help women to have orgasms, based on the book Becoming Orgasmic byJulia R. Heiman, Leslie Lo Piccolo, and Joseph Lopiccolo. Elaine and Mike are a married couple in their twenties. Elaine has never had an orgasm, so she orders the book and talks with Mike about doing the program. This means that they don't have intercourse until she is ready for it again. He is unsure at first, but agrees because it will help their sex life. Elaine goes through the program, examining her feelings about her own body, thinking about her religious upbringing influenced her feelings about sexual pleasure, and then moving on to looking at her own genitals, feeling her own body, using a vibrator, and then exploring masturbation with Mike. Eventually she and Mike have a much more satisfying sex life.

Fee: $10 per person

Tues 11 Dec - Holding On by John R. Killacky (7:30 – 9:30p.m.)

Three couples coping with disability talk about how their relationships changed when disability entered their lives. Well-known cellist Joan Jeanrenaud and visual artist Katherine Sherwood are featured with their partners, along with the filmmaker and his male partner.

Director's Statement: Holding On features three couples coping with the resultant physiological, cognitive, emotional, sexual, and social issues of disability. Ten years ago I was partially paralyzed from unexpected complications from surgery. Holding Onbegins with my husband and I discussing our experiences. World-renowned cellist Joan Jeanrenaud (formerly of Kronos Quartet) then discusses living with multiple sclerosis with her caregiving partner. Finally painter and UC Berkeley professor Katherine Sherwood and her husband frankly discuss the impact of her stroke on their family. Our partners struggle to care for us in the aftermath of our disabilities. Partners however are more often than not silent about the emotional, physical, and social toll as they too live with disability. Society empathizes with the disabled one in a relationship, and caregivers have little opportunity to be heard. My project sought to draw out their perspectives, insights, and realities.

Fee: $10 per person

Two Weeks to SAR! Sign up!

"I have to say I knew not what to expect when I first attended SAR. I knew I was going to experience discomfort; but having known Martha for some time, I knew she made a wonderful facilitator; and I was correct. Martha made sure that the whole situation was as comfortable and guided as possible. SAR made me more open on my attitude towards sex. The various type of sex, the various preferences, and how all of such can actually be a calming, freeing experience." - Male Participant

"I first attended SAR with a fair amount of resistance to the notion that it will be uncomfortable and weird to be viewing material with a group of strangers. However as the sessions proceeded, I found myself transformed through the process and the openness in discussion and sharing our views and perspectives definitely helped to challenge the various pre-conceived notions or pre-judgements that we have about certain things. Having gone through it, I do think that the process helps in broadening our perspectives and becoming more tolerant individuals capable of appreciating people for who they are and to see beyond stereotypes. Credit must go to Dr. Martha Lee for administering the process and for creating an environment where frank, honest discussion is possible." - Male participant

SAR is a process-oriented, structured group experience to promote participants' awareness of their values, beliefs and attitudes on various issues in sexuality and to assist them in understanding how these attitudes and values affect them professionally and personally. The SAR experience involves viewing a series of videos and discussing reactions in a small group facilitated by an experienced sexuality educator.

What is a SAR?

Sexual Attitude Restructuring (SAR) was a creation of National Sex Forum in San Francisco back in the 1970s, and has become an integral part of training in sexuality in USA. It is being introduced into Singapore through certified sexologist, Martha Lee of Eros Coaching (www.eroscoaching.com).

SAR is a process-oriented, structured group experience to promote participants' awareness of their values, beliefs and attitudes on various issues in sexuality, and to assist them in understanding how these attitudes and values affect them professionally and personally. Also an unusual opportunity for becoming more aware of one's unexamined beliefs and for clarifying one's values, SAR is neither a traditional academic experience designed to disseminate cognitive information, nor is it psychotherapy directed toward the resolution of personal problems. It is a powerful way to increase one’s sexuality comfort and change attitudes that may interfere with effective communication and teaching about sexuality.

Why is my attitude towards sexuality important?

Our attitudes express themselves through words and actions. Your attitude is an outward expression of who you are, rather than what you do or know. Attitude reflects behaviour: your attitude towards another determines the other’s attitude towards you. In short, your attitude determines outcome and the quality of the life you have. Have you examined what you stand for and why when it comes to sexuality? SAR allows you to do so!

What do you do at SAR?

The SAR experience involves viewing a series of videos and discussing reactions in a small group facilitated by an experienced sexuality educator. The workshop is designed to increase understanding of the wide spectrum of human sexual arousal and behavior. Topics to be explored include fantasy; sexual myths; masturbation; heterosexual, gay, lesbian and bisexual relationships; transgender; alternative relationships; disability and aging.

Who should attend SAR?

Anyone who wish to better understand their own sexuality and that of others, as well as for people who are working in the fields related to sex and sexuality should take a SAR. SAR provides innovative and practical information, training and skills necessary for more competent, sensitive, professional and personal functioning.

Enjoying My Body, Moving Without Agenda

This article first appeared on PublicHouse.sg. Last September, I attended a ten-day residential program, which is part of the Sexological Bodywork certificationin Australia. Though this was the second time I was going through this program, I was returning as one of four assistant coaches. I felt it was important to connect with my community (sex-positive people who spoke my lingo), refresh my skills and acquire new knowledge. We stayed at Gunnebah Resort and I was right: the entire trip was so good for me! Away from the hustle and bustle of urban living, as well as the pressures and stress of running a practice, I was able to let go and be a student again (for the most part). Besides attending daily lessons, I participated in the combination of breath and movement sessions. We were also given the choice to attend daily student-led wake-up exercises (I attended all of them). And the food (even from a self-proclaimed non-food-lover) was amazing! I never knew how delicious and creative organic food--especially fresh salads--could be! At the end of the intensive, we were each asked what our personal and professional learning edges were. While I was sad with the impending separation with the group, I was struck by how at ease, comfortable, free and fluid I felt in my body. But of course, we had been breathing, dancing, exercising and eating right for a good ten days! Even my course mates remarked how different I looked: more relaxed, calmer, and definitely, more "centred". What if, I wondered, I was able to continue this back in Singapore? Hence, one of the intentions I set was to truly enjoy being in my body through movement. Upon my return, I set about looking for free-flow movement classes, much like what I experienced during sexological bodywork, where there is no agenda other than to move according to what your body feels like doing. It is pretty much like dancing at a club, not knowing what song is coming up next, except you were doing so not to show off, draw attention to yourself, or attract a prospective romantic or sexual partner, but for the sheer joy of movement, the joy of being alive even. I should not have been, but I was surprised  when I could not find any in Singapore. I was contemplating starting my own movement class more so for my own benefit than anything else, when I stumbled upon the 5 Rhythms sessions at The Substation. I had heard about 5 Rhythms from my fellow course mate, Steven, and was ecstatic about the find. However, the first class I could attend was Tuesday 10 January the next year (this was in December when I first enquired). I jostled and managed to get three of my friends to attend my first 5 Rhythms session with me, and we all loved it! By the end of the session, each of us got what we wanted from the session: our comfort with our bodies expanded considerably. Now, I recommend it to everyone I know! All too often, I come across individuals who are so caught up in their work that they are very much stuck "in their heads", where their only connection with their bodies is what goes on mentally. There is no fluidity in their movement and step. Their body is hunched as if the weight of the world is on their shoulder. Worse still, their breath is shallow and laboured. Because this has become an unconscious way of living, they are unaware of the tension stored in their bodies, and massages can only do so much. Just how does one actively "return to his or her body", and enjoy being in their skin? When will they realise that their connection to their body has everything to do with being able to be open to feeling greater sensation, experiencing stronger pleasure and feeling more intense orgasms during sex? First, the awareness and recognition that you (all of us do) need to reconnect with your body must be present. Next is the desire and willingness to be open, to try something new,  be it a breath or movement class. And hopefully when you do feel better and recognise that there is definitive progress you will continue to keep up with the practice of being in touch with your body, not just your mind. Your body takes care of you. Who takes care of your body? To enjoy your body, beginning to move your body without agenda is one possibility. Reconnecting with your breath is another. You may wish to attend my one-hour Ecstatic Breath workshops starting from March, also at The Substation here. Dr Martha Lee is Founder and Clinical Sexologist of Eros Coaching in Singapore. Your breath is your most intimate companion. Health, vitality, abundance, and love are within your reach!

Fee: $20 per person

Inspired by the wonderfully odd and humorous short films created by Isabella Rossellini and released on DVD for the first time, Green Porno offers a visually arresting and scientifically accurate look at the sex lives of marine animals and other creatures. We have ACRES (Animal Concerns Research & Education Society) lead a discussion at the end of the screening.
